Mindi Morris is 5'7" and 125 lbs, with blonde hair, big green eyes, a naturally flawless smile, and a striking figure. She can usually be found either doing chores on the family farm or manning (womanning?) a small roadside stand selling produce, pies, and home-cooked meals to travelers, local day laborers, or caravans along I-43.
Mindi was the fourth of seven children (4 brothers, 2 sisters - both sisters are younger) born to a family on a small hardscrabble patch of reclaimed farmland that barely produced enough to keep them all fed. She had a tough time as a child, less because of poverty than because of school. The village school only taught up to a 7th grade level, but all the things they wanted her to learn were so hard! And the other kids were mean, always making fun of her for not understanding things and for wearing hand-me-down clothes from her brothers. They made her cry almost every day. She couldn't wait to get back to the farm where nobody called her a dummy.
Things started to change when she was 13. Suddenly the boys at school were acting friendly and doing her small favors. One or another of them always seemed to be around the family farm, offering to help out with her chores. It never occurred to Mindi that this had anything to do with puberty, or with the fact that she was developing earlier and more impressively than the other girls; Mama had always told her that the other kids would be nicer once they matured a bit, and Mindi just assumed the boys had finally grown out of their mean phase. Over time, the girls seemed to come around too; they invited her for sleepovers and social events. She didn't associate this with her unconscious ability to draw boys and figured girls just took a little longer to start being nice. Before she knew it, without really trying, she was a popular figure in her hometown.
When she was 16, Daddy built a little wooden stand along the old highway for selling vegetables. Much to her surprise, he asked Mindi to run it. Even more to her surprise, she turned out to be good at it. There always seemed to be customers willing to make generous trades, and if most of them were men it was probably because of the old-fashioned community she lived in. Before long she started selling pies, pickles, and home-cooked meals as well. The tiny business proved to be a modest but steady success, which she chalked up to her and Mama's cooking. Mindi had found her niche.
In terms of personality, Mindi is very outgoing, friendly, and sweet. She hates to see anyone sad or grumpy and will usually try to cheer such people up, either through food or conversation (she's also a "hugger", at least with people she knows well). She can be very persistent about this, but if someone is determined to be unpleasant she'll decide they're "mean" and give up (she doesn't understand why anyone would be mean on purpose, but she knows it happens and disapproves). She is always genuinely pleased to see a familiar face, or meet a new one. In contrast to the "dumb blonde" stereotype, she's a very old-fashioned girl; she's had a couple of boyfriends, but is not promiscuous or "easy". If accused of being a flirt or tease, or of trading on her looks, she will be utterly and sincerely baffled. She doesn't consider herself all that attractive (in her own mind she hasn't changed much from the sad little girl in oversized boys' clothing she once was). She doesn't flirt on purpose or wear provocative or revealing clothing (except in summer, for the sake of comfort; she attributes the summer increase in customer traffic to the pleasant weather) and doesn't make (or, as a rule, understand) suggestive comments or jokes. And she legitimately believes that when men do her favors, give her things, or overpay for her goods it's just because they're nice; in most ways she's incredibly naive. She knows she's not very smart but tries to make up for it by being sunny and kind. The world is a difficult place for Mindi, but she tries her best.
Right now, Mindi is content to be helping out her family at the produce stand. In the longer term, she wants to find a nice man (her parents hope she'll find someone rich, but Mindi doesn't think that way), settle down, and raise a family of her own - preferably on a farm, but she'd move elsewhere for the right guy. Much as she loves her hometown, she'd like to see more of the world and would love an opportunity to travel to "exotic" places like Milwaukee or Madison (though she would never leave home without her parents' permission). And she would be fairly easy to recruit to a cause or faction provided their goals and methods are "nice".
PCs will be most likely to meet Mindi at her produce stand while traveling. They might even decide to seek her out out of curiosity - caravan veterans like to talk about the hot "pie chick". She will most likely be a friend/acquaintance and source of provisions, but could sometimes provide information as well. People often tell her things, and she'll share them if nobody said they were secrets - though it's likely she'll jumble up the details. As noted above, she could also be recruited as a cook (she really is a competent cook, even if that's not why customers come to her stand), spokesperson (she's unsophisticated but has a knack for getting people to be nice to her), or general morale-booster.
